Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City - Saturday, September 10th -

Many hundreds of birders out and about, including very sizeable contingents of
incredible, bright young birders of New York, for walks (including some guided
walks on behalf of various non-profit org’s. such as the Linnaean Society of
N.Y., the N.Y.C.A.S., and others), with many independent bird observers as
well) and collectively finding a great variety of migrants and other species.
In sum at least 25 American warbler species were noted, and some of these in
modest to good numbers, even after some departure flight of the previous night.
Palm Warbler was one of the species found in the modest multiple in Central
Park (& also elsewhere in the county) and there were also fair numbers of
Bay-breasted, Blackpoll, and notably, Yellow Warblers in various area of the
park, along with the broad array of other warbler spp. including multiples
(again) of Cape May and Black-throated Green Warblers. (Yellow Warbler had a
definite fresh little surge in numbers, and this was apparently noted around
the region from a number of areas.) The rather few E. Kingbirds still being
seen, while not exceedingly late, are getting to be so, with many of that
species having moved on well-south (of New York) by now.

An Olive-sided Flycatcher that was seen by many in Strawberry Fields, in
various groups and independently, stayed a while, giving good views. Well over
a dozen hummingbirds, all seen to be Ruby-throated (!), were found in a lot of
different sections of the park on the day; in some sites with good flowers for
nectar, the hummers were occasionally seen 3, 4 and 5 or more at one time.
Thanks to all of the diverse active observers on the day for coming out, and to
all of multiple walk-leaders for helping to lead the way. Many other migrants
were also found on the day.

There were a lot of great sightings from all around N.Y. County as well, and
some on prior days- a report on some of the many other species & sightings may
soon be offered.

peaceful birding to all,

Tom Fiore
