New York County (in N.Y. City), including Manhattan, Randall’s Island and
Governors Island

The first-county record Buff-breasted Sandpiper (found by J. Suzuki on 9/21)
was still present on Randall’s Island on Thursday, 9/22, with multiple
observers and photographers.

Wed., Sept. 21st brought at least several rare to uncommon species over or into
the county, with a photographed American Golden-Plover (T. Healy) as a flyover
for Randall’s Island (not re-found there, and presumed not returning at
all), while over in lower-east Manhattan, a Summer Tanager was photographed in
Tompkins Square Park (F. Marcisak). An American Pipit was found on
Randall’s Island later in the day on 9/21, although not viewed by the
many who came out for the far-rarer Buff-breasted Sandpiper, the former was
confirmed for the eBird record.

At Central Park in Manhattan, Slate-colored Juncos were seen on 9/21, not rare
at all there nor exceptionally early (nor were these the first of season in the
county) but another indicator of the change of seasons. On 9/20, Great Crested
Flycatcher was still present at Central Park, as we enter the lengthy window in
autumn when other species in that genus (particularly, Ash-throated Fly.)
become possibilities for the county and more generally, much of eastern N.
America. As flycatcher diversity diminishes with the departure of so many in
that tribe, we find Eastern Phoebe becoming the default-species, and the one
which above alll need be eliminated as a choice first, when considering other
flycatchers on into October and especially later in the season. For now, E.
Wood-Pewee and other typical migrants are continuing. As are a wide diversity
of other migrants.

Peaceful birding to all,

Tom Fiore
