Anybody considering making a trip to Perch River WMA for their annual open house may want to reconsider, as NYSDEC has cancelled the open house this year because Eastern Equine Encephalitis has been detected in the immediate vicinity of the WMA. Apparently the area will be sprayed for mosquitoes sometime in the next week or so, but from what I understand Perch River won't reopen after the area is sprayed. For those who don't know, much of Perch River WMA (the area posted as Wetlands Restricted Area) is off limits to entry except during an annual two-week open house during the second half of August and for hunting later in the year, so this cancellation is very disappointing.
