Manhattan, N.Y. City - Thursday, October 10th -

With birders in multiple not-for-profit guided bird walks, and independent
observers and photographers as well, an American Bittern showed nicely for many
in the Central Park Ramble starting from first-light on Thursday and lingering
in that area. Photos were obtained by some of these on the not-for-profit
guided walks and later by others.

A Sora was a lingering bird at Bryant Park in midtown Manhattan, and a colorful
Dickcissel was lingering at Battery Park at the south end of Manhattan, both
seen and photographed again on Thursday, with multiple admirers in each
location.

The recent ongoing spate of migrant cuckoos was continuing, not only around
Manhattan including in Central Park, but also around N.Y. County, these recent
sightings mostly of Yellow-billed, but a very few Black-billed Cuckoos also
were still being found and well-documented. A Marsh Wren seen well and
photographed in the Central Park Ramble on Wed., had not been reported so-far
for Thursday, but could possibly still be around. Its been a fairly good fall
here for that species, with more certainly possible going thru this month.

At least 17 species of migratory warblers were found by early afternoon on
Thursday in Central Park, and the ultimate number there, and for all of
Manhattan, might grow by a few additional by end of day with so many birders
out enjoying the mild sunny weather, and further after-work walkers still to
head thru birding locations. Some species of warblers are still being seen in
fairly good, to lowered numbers, around Manhattan.

Sparrows of many species also are continuing with at least 9 native sparrow
species in Central Park alone, and all of the species of that park also in
sparrow-y sites scattered around Manhattan. These include White-crowned and
Lincolns Sparrows in the multiple and Savannah Sparrows in somewhat more
limited sites around Manhattan.

Red-breasted Nuthatches are ongoing in multiple sites, with ongoing multiples
of them at Central Park on Thursday. American Wigeon, Green-winged Teals,
Ruddy Ducks, Wood Ducks and other regular autumnal waterfowl are all ongoing at
Central Park, with some of these species also showing elsewhere around
Manhattan and N.Y. County. Also still to be found are Laughing Gulls in the
multiple, including those appearing at Central Park.

Many other migrants are still being found thru Thursday, and further uncommon
or rarer species may be awaiting discovery. And we will hope that the various
owls that are around will be observed quietly and with respect to their needs,
without any need to zoom up to a bird that might be sleeping and requires daily
rest.

Thanks to many, many observers and photographers for sightings, alerts,
reports, and in-the-field tips.

Good birding,

Tom Fiore
