The idea is that to save space on the server I would just email the
backup to my Gmail address and then delete the backup from the
server.  Then I could keep as many backups in my Gmail account as I
liked, which would let me go back a day, a week or a month to old
backups.

I'm might try something like PHPMailer instead of the built-in mail()
function.  Hopefully it doesn't hang on large messages like mail()
seems to.
