If you are completly new to PHP I think it is best to spend a couple of months with one of these books:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=php&x=0&y=0 After you have done the basics, I think it is better to learn by doing real world projects. Kind of like chess, you have to know the basic rules first, but after that, you learn better by playing games (and reading the odd book), not by spending years reading chess theory in books. You will get good at googling problems, and if that doesn't work, posting in forums, it is suprising how much info is on the net if you google your problem and look at the first couple of pages of results.
