Yes, it's a shame that they didn't listen more to the users on this issue.

I never really cared much for their explanation of the problem. It's
like they could see the trade-off: pissing off millions of beginner
developers and experienced PHP users VS fixing a very obscure
ambiguity issue with static functions that would only arise as the
result of poor package design. Choosing the privelege the latter was
the wrong choice in my opinion, and shows that these people have a
profound lack of insight.

People everywhere said they wanted the p1::p2 syntax for namespaces,
but would also be ok if they had to use p1:::p2. They should have
listened. Time will tell, how costly this mistake is going to be for
PHP.
