To answer your question - is this a one off or onegoing need?

It all depends whether the phone supports AT commands or not.

First you have to find this out, then find a command set reference (good
luck...)

In response to the wider issue (as this has been asked about before on this
list) -

This is why I suggest anyone who has an ongoing need to use a cellular modem
and preferably a Wavecom.

Not because it's good value (It isn't - It is afterall a really overpriced
cellphone module with a serial interface) but because it is documented.

Additionally it will also have a proper power supply and aerial connections
which you may consider a worthwhile feature.

FYI - the GSM band support you need in New Zealand is 900/1800 for Vodafone
and 900 for 2degrees. Any dual band model should be fine.
