Personally, I always use http authentication with phpMyAdmin, and I think every should.
Wasn't that long ago that 2 of the sites I manage had multiple attempts at a phpMyAdmin directory, different case etc, was around 50 attempts in a minute so it would have been a bot trying to find a similar exploit.
