We've built several Drupal-based membership management systems, including online renewals and automatic "your membership is going to expire soon" emails. See, for example, http://brewersguild.org.nz.
Drupal's certainly not a bad option for such systems - using Ubercart and expiring Roles, it works quite easily. Might need a bit of custom code for bells and whistles, but most of the basic functionality is just a few configuration options away.
