I'm of the opinion that Apache is still the best fit for PHP. However, when 
Apache is running with PHP, mod_rewrite and all that sort of lovely stuff it's 
not ideal for serving static content.

I use Nginx for serving up my static content and then proxy-pass through to 
Apache for everything else.

If a page has 40 static assets then the Apache requests drop from 41 to 1.  
Good way of taking the stress off of Apache.
