Hi Greg,
I didn't have much success when I was over there 2 years ago, but to be
fair I wasn't looking particularly hard. Most of the replies I got back
started with "Hi Harvey, do you speak German" - which at the time, I
couldn't. A lot of people say that it's not essential to speak good
German to get web dev work, but I think it certainly makes it harder
when you are competing against candidates that do. A friend of mine was
doing a 4 hours-per night after work crash course in German and got
good pretty quickly.
Another thing that people anecdotally said was that Berlin wasn't the
best city to be looking for web dev work in. I think partially due to
Berlin being chock full of immigrants and travellers, there's a lot more
competition for the temporary / contract roles and there are others
prepared to work for less than you are. I was told there was more IT
work happening in Köln or Frankfurt. This probably doesn't help much.
That aside, Berlin is a fantastic place to live. We had so much fun
there, and my appetite for Kiwi beer has been permanently tainted.
Also If anyone turns up at your door with a clipboard, pretend that you
don't speak German or English. They come round every so often to check
your TV or Wifi network, which they impose big levies on. Kinda like the
broadcasting fee thing that we used to have here.
Good luck.
Harvey.

I am currently in Berlin, Germany and am considering looking for a PHP job or
doing contracting here. Does anyone happen to know the best job search websites
and recruitment agencies that I should use here. Also any good tips and advice
would be welcome.
