Very late to the party, however thought I would add my two cents.

I have been using vtiger crm and it is a very solid system, although there
is a new version (6) which is in beta currently (RC expected in the next
month or two) and I would not recommend starting with the older version
available currently as the new version is a major re-factoring of the code
base.

vtiger was forked from the sugar code so is not necessarily going to be
smaller/easier to implement, however it is highly customisable and
dependant on the project you are focusing on has a good chance of being
your best option.

I guess it all depends on what sort of integration you need as to whether
the system can be modified modularly or if you're going to have to hack the
base code (which would be bad mkay). If you want to give a full outline of
your requirements I'd be happy to outline what would be required in order
to get vtigercrm doing what you need.

Good luck
