Thanks [~reschke] for the reference. I tried not to change any logic in this
patch, as introducing the new structure already made the patch quite big. I
think that if we want to change the locking behaviour, we should do this in the
new issue, so there will be a clear separation between refactoring in here and
removing the TreeLock in another. What do you think?
