[~mduerig], I'm generally +1 for everything you said. I'm already planning
further decompositions of the garbage collection code in components that can be
mixed-and-match in different variations (see OAK-7434). Unfortunately, it is a
somehow lengthy process. I will cleanup the code along the way. In the
meantime, let the feedback flow!
