We should have a metric indicating the number of retries while trying to renew
the lock. Also the shutdown should be recorded as metric. Right now it's
possible to check both by evaluating the logs, but that's something we cannot
alert on.
At the same time, we should evaluate how helpful the stacktrace in these warn
messages is.
