JAKARTA (Dow Jones)--Coal miner PT Bumi Resources (BUMI.JK) said Thursday
that
its 2009 net profit fell 49% due mostly to lower sales and deferred
stripping
costs.
Net profit for the January-to-December period fell to $*190.45 million*from
an adjusted net profit of $*371.69 million in 2008.*
Bumi Resources' spokesman Dileep Srivastava told Dow Jones Newswires in
a
text message that the company booked $275 million in accumulated deferred
stripping costs, which had been amortized since 2003. Stripping costs are
the
expenses incurred in removing excess waste materials in mine operations.
"Without the deferred stripping costs,* Bumi's full-year net profit
could*
* have risen to $440.81 million*," Srivastava said, adding that the figure
was
above the market consensus.
Bumi will give more details on its 2009 earnings on Monday.
He said that in the full year of 2009, Bumi sold 58.4 million metric
tons
of coal, up 10% from 51.5 million tons by the end of 2008. It sold the coal
at
an average selling price of $62 per ton, compared with $73 per ton in the
previous year.
"But we expect the 2010 outlook to be very strong," he added.
