Monsanto rallies on rosier profit view By Steve Gelsi, MarketWatch Last update: 4:27 p.m. EDT March 25, 2008 NEW YORK (MarketWatch) - Monsanto shares rallied Tuesday after the agriculture giant boosted its profit forecast well past analyst estimates on strength in its core corn seed and herbicide business. Monsanto ( MON114.54, +10.28, +9.9%) jumped $10.28 to close at $114.54 on expectations by the St. Louis company for 2008 ongoing earnings of $3.15-$3.25 a share, up from its earlier view of $2.70- $2.80 a share. It expects as-reported 2008 earnings of $3.38-$3.48 a share. For the second-quarter, the farming supplier expects ongoing earnings of about $1.75 a share, or $1.98 a share as reported. Ongoing earnings figures include a loss of 23 cents a share from costs tied to a Solutia claim settlement, the company said. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial forecast 2008 earnings of $2.87 a share and second-quarter profit of $1.35 a share, on average.
