You can do an in-place upgrade of Ubuntu from 16.04 to 22.04.
You can back up the rrd directory, config.php and mysql/mariadb database
first, and then if it fails you can just do a re-install and restore these.
Running "do-release-upgrade" on ubuntu will cause it to update to the
next LTS version, which will be 18.04 then 20.04 then 22.04.

You can follow this. By the time you get to 20.04 your MariaDB should be
new enough. You may need to run the "apt install" commands from the
install guide to make sure all the packages for Observium are installed.

In any case, you should upgrade the server to something more recent, which
brings a newer version of MariaDB.
