*CITY OF CAPE TOWN* * * *MEDIA RELEASE* * * *25 OCTOBER 2010* * * *Metro Police arrest 34 suspects during series of high visibility patrols * * * City of Cape Town Metro Police officers arrested 34 suspects for various offences, during high visibility patrols which began last Thursday 21 October 2010. Since ‘Operation Choke’ began in Hanover Park on Thursday morning, 21 October, officers have arrested ten suspects for possession of narcotics. One of the suspects was a 16 year-old girl, who was apprehend on Athberg Walk after officers noticed that she fled at the sight of their patrol vehicle. An officer gave chase and apprehended the suspect and a search revealed two Mandrax tablets, 58 TIK straws and 20 units of TIK hidden in her tracksuit pants. She was arrested for possession of narcotics and taken to the Manenberg Police Station. Metro Police officers have had to intensify operations in the Nyanga area as a result of service delivery protests. Seven suspects were arrested for public violence during protest action in Emms Drive and Lansdowne Road on Sunday, 24 October. Two Metro Police officers were injured after the group pelted stones at their patrol vehicles. The officers were taken to the N1 City Hospital, where they received treatment. Later that day, officers arrested one suspect in Manenberg for possession of illegal narcotics after 20 dagga stoppe were found and confiscated. Then, during a roadblock in Harare, Khayelitsha, officers arrested 16 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol. “Our intensified patrols, combined with ‘Operation Choke’, proved highly successful this weekend.
