CITY OF CAPE TOWN

MEDIA RELEASE

09 MAY 2011

Vice Squad and Liquor Enforcement Unit issue fines amounting to R26 000

The City's Liquor Enforcement Unit and Vice Squad held operations on both
Friday and Saturday evenings into the early hours of the morning and issued
fines that collectively amount to approximately R26 000.

On Friday evening, the Liquor Enforcement Unit held a joint operation with
the South African Police Services (SAPS) in the Woodstock central business
district (CBD). Officers inspected six night clubs and issued spot fines
amounting to approximately R6 000. Fines were issued for contraventions such
as operating without the necessary City authorisation, non-compliance with
the Community Safety Bylaw (for example obstruction of fire escapes routes),
and contravention of the Noise Control Regulations.

According to Assistant Chief Nathan Ladegourdie, Spokesperson for
Specialised Law Enforcement Services, some of the inspections they carried
out in Woodstock were as a result of complaints received by members of the
community, especially those pertaining to the noise complaints. "We will
continue to hold these types of operations City-wide, as night clubs change
ownership and are not always compliant with keeping within the regulations,"
said Ladegourdie.

The Vice Squad conducted operations in the Kenilworth, Wynberg and Wetton
areas on Friday evening, and in Green Point and Sea Point on Saturday.
During these operations the officers issued fines amounting to R20 000. The
officers gave warnings or issued spot fines to a total of 27 prostitutes,
and arrested one prostitute for an outstanding warrant from the Wynberg
Magistrates Court. All the prostitutes fined or given warnings during the
operations held in the Green Point and Sea Point areas originated from
Senator Park.
