I'd say go ahead and remove them. They were probably kept at the time
because a stabe version of Octave with these functions didn't exist. If I
remember correctly, the octave-forge versions of these functions is
dependent on X11 as well and won't work with Windows or the Mas Aqua
terminal of gnuplot.
