I moved this report to the Octave-Forge bug tracker at

but, as Jordi said, nobody is currently maintaining the symbolic package, so, 
unless a new volunteer
shows up, the bug isn't likely to be fixed any time soon.

You might want also to consider maxima <http://maxima.sourceforge.net/>
for doing symbolic computations.
