Some time ago, I stopped using 'remez' and now use 'fir2' instead. I 
think it uses a more robust algorithm. I find it much more useful in 
general.

I wrote a tutorial for signal filtering that illustrates the use of 
'fir2' for my students. It's in Spanish. However, I think if you look at 
the code in page 2 together with Figure 1, it will be clear how it works:
