Given that spline-gcvspl is non-free due to license issues in its central program, it seems like the splines package is a good place to include smoothing spline capabilities too. Accordingly, I added a csaps function to it in the SVN repository. This function doesn't yet have all the features of the Matlab Curve Fitting Toolbox's csaps (particularly support for multidimensional splines), but is a working starting point.
