This probably the best pattern to use, ie Party -> ProductCategoryRole -> 
ProductCategoryMember -> Product

The reason I say this is that the pattern is already being used for 
role-limited permissions in the Catalog Manager. For details see the product 
permission checking simple-method in ProductServices.xml.
