Gary and Peter both nail the key issue, which is that "free"
in the context of OpenSource refers to the disposition of the
software after it is created, not how you fund it's creation.

The hope is that people will see that open methodologies and
accessible sourcecode lead to better software.   That
open designs will be more widely discussed and consequently
better designs.   And that these are benefits that have value.

Once users see this value, they'll be willing to pay for it.

advocating OpenSource doesn't mean you agree to work 
without compensation.
