Kylix Install Hell!
This isn't exactly the fault of Kylix itself - but rather a problem with
Linux in general.
I found I needed to upgrade a library - glibc - to version 2.2.x from my
existing library in order to install Kylix. So I go get a RPM for glibc.
Only problem is the RPM's won't install, giving me an error regarding a
query?
There is some problem with my setup preventing a automated install. I figure
the quickest way to upgrade will be to download a Tarball instead and do a
full build and install. Boy was I wrong! I read about 10 pages of
configuration information - configuration for the build process that is -
before actually trying to configure the build. Bad news - I don't have
several things required to build glibc - including a recent compiler, make
etc, and quite a few other things.
So I go back to look at the RPM's. Rather than using the GUI RPM installer
I use command line this time - and I find out that the RPM installer
application doesn't handle the most recent RPM's. So I go and download the
latest RPM for the RPM installer itself. I try to install it and guess
what - It needs GLIBC 2.2.X!!!!
Its at about this stage that I start drooling on the keyboard and banging my
head against the monitor (no not really).
Linux has been running my web server and email off my JetStream connection
for well over a year now. Its very stable. In fact in the entire time I
have had it the only problems have been when kiddies have pressed the reset
button (ie no shutdown). Most recent experience with installing on Linux
has been getting less painfull.
RPM's are making life easier however - and to some extent the above problems
are self inflicted from not having upgraded earlier to the new RPM system
and Compilers.
Regards,
Peter
