I think enough people have commented on VS.NET so I'll skip that part.
It appears to me that MS is going to follow the same path with the .NET SDK
as what Sun did with the Java SDK. That is, you will get the .NET SDK "free"
with class libraries and all compilers and other nice tools included. This
means you can create lots of .NET stuff using command-line compilers without
needing VS.NET and that will spawn a zillion 3rd party .NET IDEs... there
are already some nifty C# editors around.
But, over and above Sun, MS is also including extra goodies like the XML
schema definition tool that allows you to convert an XML schema into a class
and vice versa, the ability to natively stream classes to and from XML, etc.
Yes, I know you can do a lot of this with Java using free tools, but MS is
including this by default. And dont forget C# enumerations...
There are already 2 flavours of Pascal being produced for .NET.... but
despite all of this, I also still like my Delphi! But never, never, never
underestimate the MS marketing machine... better to be covered on all
fronts. I would be nice to inherit from a C# class in Delphi and vice
versa... or would it?
