I bought one of the Pioneer ones, specifically because it has a "Jukebox" function whereby you can load all your MP3s on the HDD, and use it for playing digital music through a decent amp.
I've been very happy with it from the point of view of recording stuff off the TV etc (once you get used to chase play and being able to easily skip through ads etc, it's really difficult to go back!), until a couple of weeks ago. It was at that point that the machine decided to "lose" all 300 albums of music on the HDD. It now tells me there is no music on the HDD, although the amount of "used" space hasn't changed, so I assume the MP3s are still there at the disk level. There is no way that I have found of getting the machine to "find" them again. So, once I've copied off all the video stuff I want to keep, I'll be taking it back to Noel Leeming to get them to send it off for "repair" sadly. To be honest, if there was an easy way for the end user to just re-format the HDD, I'd do that myself, and just reload everything, but there isn't. The cynical side of me is waiting for Noel Leeming to try and charge me for this experience since I suspect they won't find anything physically wrong; seems to be more likely to be a small firmware bug to me. Apart from that slight issue, I've been very happy with the Pioneer. Just my $0.02. Cheers, C. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Jeremy Coulter Well.......I had a philips 725 something or other, and it was an earlish HD recorder. Got it from Smiths Chity when they oppend the Bushin store. Was $1199 and on that day they were $699 on special....so couldn't let the go !! Since it was my first experience of a HD recorder and I didn't bother comparing it with others, I actually didn't mind it. But I agree, the menus were very slow ! But we used it EVERY day for recording and playing DVD's for the kids etc. And we certanly got out $699 worth in 18months. I was a bit hesitent at going beack to another Philips I must admit. I did notice that Smiths City had Philips recorders for $499 but hey are older ones, and they will have the slow menus too. >From everything I have read, every one raves about the Pioneer ones, >and they are on special at smiths City at the moment, and NEARLY go one, but the one I ended up getting was another Philips and the first thing I did was get the guy in the shop to set it up so I could check out the menus etc. It performed a LOT better than the last one. The only real complain so far is the buttons on the remote a bit small and I cant palx a DivX encoded avi hen is recording to the HD. The other reason I got the Philips one was because it was $699, and then it was on special for $599 at Farmers, then they had 20% off and since it was the only unit of the philips they had in stock at the store, and the store is not having an electronics section soon, I got even more of a discount....got it for $450 !! But, if I had $599...I would got o Smiths City and get the Pioneer. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Robert martin Not answering your question sorry but ... I am looking at DVD / HDD recorders and notice that the phillips 160GB machine is about $200 less than all other brands ($499 at bond and bond - all others about $699). I have a mate who has a phillips DVD (only) recorder and hates it, says its really slow to do anything with. How did you find yours ?
