Ah Jeremy ...
I have examined Lazarus and FPC in some depth in recent weeks and have
been impressed by the improvements in just a few months. Lazarus is
actually not too bad and I'd say compares pretty well with Kylix but
without all the flakiness. There is now a debugger which gives the basic
debug features but as yet no CPU view. It has code completion, tool tips
etc and is improving constantly.
I managed to translate some Kylix code to FPC without any drama and
although the compile times are somewhat longer than Delphi / Kylix the
end result is fine.
The whole Kylix issue has caused me no little pain and Lazarus looked
like it could do the job OK. However I am now going the C++ way using
Eclipse for all my Linux projects. Using AJAX for user interfaces tho'
Java would also be fine with Swing or SWT or similar.
Not withstanding I believe FPC/Lazarus are shaping up to be a robust
alternative for Linux development.
