FWIW, gnome.org actually uses this sort of mechanism for a few of it's websites 
(www.gnome.org, foundation.gnome.org and developer.gnome.org) and most of the 
time it works out just fine. Essentially we have a commit hook so that it does 
a 
complete build, then copies the files over. However, it's not really a website 
that needs to be 'started' as such, and very little of it currently uses 
databases.
