I think people who are doing research will have some things in common
that cut across technology areas.  The primary goal in research is to
produce papers, not product-quality software.  For example, I expect the
research community (lower-case "community") to be more willing to make
incompatible changes and to have less interest in architectural review
or testing.

Whether that merits a separate OpenSolaris Community, I don't know.
It's a little bit like testing--do you spread the test engineers among
the different product teams, or do you have a separate test team (whose
members work on different projects)?

If nothing else, having a separate Research Community would provide a single
place for researchers using OpenSolaris to "meet", find out what
everyone is working on, maybe find ways to leverage each others' work.

Having some input from actual researchers would be useful here.
