I participate in the Tokyo Linux Community, and they are very good about educating new people (and reminding the existing guys) about trimming and not top posting, etc. They do that educating on list and off list (I`ve experienced both). The group has been around for 15 years and there are 400 people on list, so it`s a pretty substantive local community and it`s clear some active management of the list is necessary.
