Proposal for Philadelphia Area Universities and Colleges User Group
Project (PAUC-OSUG)
Purpose: The primary purpose of this OSUG is to drive awareness and
adoption of OpenSolaris in the universities and colleges in the
Philadelphia area. A secondary purpose is to connect with industry by
encouraging membership to all computer users interested in OpenSolaris,
allowing a free exchange of ideas and information between industry and
academia.
List of Community Groups Sponsoring the project: Advocacy CG
List of project team members:
Joseph J. Trout, Ph.D., Sun Microsystems (joetrout), primary contact
Shumon Hoque, Lead Engineer, ISC, University of Pennsylvania (shuque)
Project Description: The primary purpose of this project is to drive
awareness and adoption of OpenSolaris primarily among engineers and
administrators employed by colleges and universities in the Philadelphia
area. This will provide a stable base for the free exchange of ideas
and experience. One of our goals will be to educate the users by
presentations by Sun Microsystems and by our members.
A secondary purpose is to encourage membership by students and engineers
working in industry. We will also encourage student adoption and
student projects.
The project will also archive its contributions like student projects,
presentations, and other material to the project space on the
OpenSolaris site.
Project Needs: This project requires project space on OpenSolaris.org
site. The project also requires a mailing list. Suggested list name is
ug-paucosug at opensolaris.org.
Related Projects: We would like to encourage the free exchange of ideas
between universities, colleges, industry, researchers, and students.
Related past activities: We conducted our first meeting June 27, 2007.
This was mainly a ?get acquainted meeting? where we discussed
OpenSolaris and the features offered by Solaris. In the past few years
we have had several Sun events.
