Will there be consideration given to community based operations that are
not under the OpenSolaris umbrella and thus not inside Sun corporate?
Some of these community operations have existed well before any open
source rendition of Solaris was even whispered about. The actual Solaris
community, the users and the people that make up the entire ecosystem,
is vast and wide and well outside of the OpenSolaris embrella.
Some of those community based operations have created considerable value
in the open source world and yet, we see little mention of them inside
the OpenSolaris world which has become entirely too corporate and
entirely too much of a business. There is nothing wrong with services
and fees, I personally support the idea and hope it does well, but not
to the exclusion of all other community involvement from people and
groups that fill a need out there in the Open Source world regardless of
it being Solaris, BeleniX, SchilliX, SunFreeware, Blastwave or
OpenSolaris(tm).
The orignal intent, the message and the soul of OpenSolaris way back
in the days of the pilot group and even before, was to have a
community which operates and feels like an open source group. With
input and valuable contributions being *possible* from a world of
people. With ease. A lot of people outside of the OpenSolaris
operation feel we have missed the target.
