Traveller and d20 are conceptually at odds. d20 is at its core a class/level system with character advancment as its goal. In Traveller, nearly all advancment occurs prior to play. There are some times when a universal game system (such as d20) is bad and loses the "flavor" of a game with a specific rule system. This is a great example. Traveller would not be Traveller without its character generation. Or, similarly, Marvel SuperHeroes would not be the same without the "comic book" feel combat system. Not only is d20 a class/level system, it is a heroic class/level system, meaning that as characters advance they distance themselves substanitally from the common person. Game more concerned with real-world growth (like say a real-world espionage game) would be hard pressed to be properly described in a heroic class/level system. Another example is Call of Cthulhu or even RuneQuest. Sure you can add a Sanity attribute and you can describe rune priests as just types of priests, but somehow something is lost in the translation. Dont get me wrong, I love d20. And if it brings back games that otherwise were not generating much interest then great. But the rule system often is a core component of the flavor of the game. And I would hate to lose that. Clark ===== http://www.necromancergames.com "3rd Edition Rules, 1st Edition Feel" __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
