I don't have a good answer for you, but about www.kargatane.com -- that's
the official Ravenloft site now, run by dedicated fans.  They're going to
have permission to do things a normal person wouldn't.  For instance, I
believe they'll be publishing (in PDF format) official Ravenloft
supplements.  I wouldn't use them as a guide to what a typical publisher
could get away with.
