How is this for simple:
My little brother (we were young) "invented" a space RPG with two stats,
nothing else.  He made up a little booklet with a green magic marker
explaining how a d20 and those two stats were used to resolve stuff (sort
like d20) and provided a list of careers and starting equipment.  That is it.
He then made up some booklet adventures but most of it he made up on the
fly.  Each was a different color marker.
Those adventures relied on so much imagination that they remain to this day
some of the most fun I ever had (lots of nostalgia to that).

I think that the system isn't nearly as important as the imaginations of the
participants, no matter how good it is.
