Another alternative would be a "persist map" flag, which causes all changes to 
a map to persist when leaving the map and entering again later and when 
saving/restoring save game files.
(This is like ZZT (which always persists maps), MegaZeux (which persists by 
default but you can turn it off), and Super ZZ Zero (which does not persist by 
default but you can enable persistence).)
(This will likely require adding new fields into the save game format. ZZT 
avoids this problem by using the same format as the world file, and Super ZZ 
Zero uses a similar format than the world file; either way, this easily allows 
changes to persist. However, in OHRRPGCE you might use the same save game when 
the .RPG file is upgraded, and the using the same format as the world file 
would break that feature, so perhaps that won't do.)
