While I do agree with Garret that an Illumos based OI would be in far better shape for support, I can see everyday that a lot of people around there are pretty screwed with Oracle movements and demand an alternative. We must try hard to not miss this opportunity window. HARD!. Tracking something mainstream like RH6 would ease the maintenance burden a lot. The main problem would be supporting the native OpenSolaris bits. For instance, solving any serious bug in ON. Luckily Illumos would patch it and OI would be able to backport the patch to ON 148 codebase. With the 6 months/next stable release support deadline, I think/hope it is doable. The alternative is to wait for the illumos based OI, losing any relevance in the process (for instance, Oracle publishes Solaris 11 first). The risk here is to have a really bad security bug we are not able to fix in a timely way, losing any reputation in the process, forever. - -- Jesus Cea Avion _/_/ _/_/_/ _/_/_/ [email protected] - http://www.jcea.es/ _/_/ _/_/ _/_/ _/_/ _/_/ jabber / xmpp:[email protected] _/_/ _/_/ _/_/_/_/_/ . _/_/ _/_/ _/_/ _/_/ _/_/ "Things are not so easy" _/_/ _/_/ _/_/ _/_/ _/_/ _/_/ "My name is Dump, Core Dump" _/_/_/ _/_/_/ _/_/ _/_/ "El amor es poner tu felicidad en la felicidad de otro" - Leibniz -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.10 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iQCVAwUBTTFfqZlgi5GaxT1NAQJlCQP/XyIU3oJmt5B0Ll17dGW3TwUqOfmJjHPM 6ucJgVFN6jjE49zYA61mseo40mzCmd+HNK8brK5tMGI+proGnGLzunu4r3kDPItz 0hjLR5TAHynGGzKNtD58EQ5eNXnM2T82lW3jp+kU0d04LSWanYDUMbSll+324bNN +6nn+EN/14M= =Yrx7 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- _______________________________________________ oi-dev mailing list [email protected] http://openindiana.org/mailman/listinfo/oi-dev
