Good idea. 

We're only a few weeks from branching OIIO 1.1 officially.  Would it suffice 
for now to tag the current trunk (which is at this moment fairly stable) as 1.1 
beta 1, with the understanding that as a beta (rather than a true release 
branch) it is subject to further API and ABI changes?  But at least it will 
have a tag that designates the minimal version of OIIO that should be used with 
OSL?
