Periodic release of the latest fixes. This should not break backwards
compatibility with source or linkage compared to previous 1.5.x releases.
This may be one of the last 1.5.x releases -- from here we will tighten the
release criteria for 1.5 to only the most critical bug fixes and low-risk
changes -- because branching of 1.6 is imminent!
