When the first line of OIIO was written 10 years ago, libtiff 3.9.0 was in beta and 4.0.0 was alpha. Maybe we built against 3.8 in those days, but we probably never tried anything earlier. I'm pretty sure that modern OIIO still builds against libtiff 3.9 without trouble.
