if we are careful about drop-in compatibility this shouldn't be a problem, I think. The main reason people still use old versions is we have had a bad habit of breaking backwards compatibility (in .9.X this is fine) but for 1.0.X and 1.1.x any newer X should be drop-in compatible with older ones.
