Earlier this used to support the tables can be in different different database using repository.xml. Nowadays you can have only PBs accessing different database. They claim that this earlier design makes the impl. complex - for e.g. 2 ph. commit is not needed anymore. But if you use the multiple PB approach, you, as a application programmer, you need to impl. that 2 phase commit protocol of your own, using those PB's api.
