I don't know your datamodel, but if you are using proxies properly they
should avoid loading of complete object nets. 
Did you make sure what exactly happens once you "hit one element"? You could
use P6Spy to trace the executed SQL statements (see faq.html for details).

The loading mechanism for user defined collection works in the same way as
for "normal" collections. So this won't improve things...

If your problem is related to loading the N side of a 1:n association you
might have a look at the association prefetch feature
(http://jakarta.apache.org/ojb/query.html#prefetched%20relationships). This
could drastically improve performance.
