Hm, if I left the editor in the author position and put the name in the contributor as an editor, maybe an automated process could be set up when future roles are opened up. For example, a program could look at each record and if the editor field in the contributor is identical to the author field, then it could move the author name from the author role to the new editor role. I don't know if it's worth the effort to plan for that, though. I don't edit that many records! ;-) 2. Author field issues This is a problem I have been running into lately when I have been working on author names that are shared by many authors. For example, the author search "Mary Hamilton" currently returns 47 hits. I have one Mary Hamilton who wrote only a few books, but her books are mixed into author records of other more prolific Mary Hamiltons. There is a problem in extracting them because when I try to edit the author in the book record, only a limited number of Mary Hamiltons shows up in the drop down field, NOT the full list of Mary Hamiltons. Because the Mary Hamilton I am looking for has only published a few works, she is not on this list! So what I need to do is go back to her author record and distinguish her name so I can narrow my search and return fewer results in the author drop-down list. Right now I am adding "bump" to the beginning of her name, so "Mary Hamilton" becomes "bump Mary Hamilton". Then I wait for the author record to refresh through the whole system (3 minutes? 5 minutes?), and then I go back into the book record and change the author to "bump Mary Hamilton" which I know is the correct author for this work. Finally, I go back into the author record and change the name back to "Mary Hamilton". In this way, I can sort mixed collections of works into the correct author records. However, the workaround is time consuming (mostly because of waiting for the system to refresh the records). It would be much easier if I could specify the exact author I am looking for in the author field by using the OL author record number instead of the author name text. This would save a lot of edits and a lot of waiting. Is anyone else having this problem? Also, it would be nice if the author drop down list included the author's birth and death dates, so I can make sure I am picking the right record. I can usually tell by the sample title that comes up, although I try to memorize the number of works currently associated with the author record I am looking for, because sometimes the first title listed is unfamiliar to me or is not in the author's usual subject range. The old system, which showed a bit of the author's bio in the drop down list, worked well because I could immediately spot which Mary Hamilton I was looking for because it's the one for whom I just entered birth date, death date, bio, etc., so there was no uncertainty.
