Thanks for the update George. I'm definitely interested in seeing universe of open book metadata expand, so I'd be happy to collaborate on this, but doing the whole import for Open Library is probably a bit too big a task for me to volunteer for right now.
The other factor is that the OKFN/OpenBibliography folks appear to be doing something with the data (although exactly what isn't clear). They have an incentive to work with this since they're an British organization, but they don't have the infrastructure that OpenLibrary does with its existing database of authors, etc. One thing to be aware of, which I only discovered through a recent random email conversation, is that the British Library has been updating the data, so the copy on archive.org is out of date. It's not at all clear from their web page (http://www.bl.uk/bibliographic/datafree.html) but apparently the distribution mechanism involves emailing them for access to a provide web/ftp site. Also, bizarrely, the Internet Archive's terms (non-commercial, personal/research only) are more restrictive than the British Library's (CC0). Not an issue for OpenLibrary, but something that other potential users of the IA copy should be aware of.
