Ruminating on this, and data harmonisation:

http://blog.foursquare.com/2011/03/14/1up-the-importance-of-platforms-and-how-we%E2%80%99re-extending-ours/

I'm working with/on a number of projects that involve grouping editions into
works in one way or another, and in each of them I'm encouraging those in
charge to use OL IDs as the primary identifier.

One problem we run up against frequently is that while it's trivial to get the
OL ID for a given ISBN, it's harder for other identifiers - such as Amazon
ASINs.

This is quite significant when, for example, building the next generation of
social reading apps like Readmill and Findings, which are trying to track
readers on Kindle, which only uses ASINs, and keep these in line with other
platforms - including paper editions.

Would OL consider building a DB of different IDs for works, to enable
harmonisation? I understand why it would be considered out of scope, but I also
think it needs to be done by someone, and I'd rather see OL do it than a
private, commercial 4sq-equivalent. And it would probably increase uptake of OL
services, no?
